Facebook Privacy

Posted by admin on July 14, 2010

Social networking giant Facebook has been the subject of quite a bit of press this summer. Critics of the site have expressed concerns regarding privacy issues and wider exposure of personal information on the web.

Hoping to alleviate privacy concerns and streamline protection, Matt Pizzimenti, a software engineer and co-founder of Olark.com, launched ReclaimPrivacy.org. This site scans yourFacebook privacy settings and warns you of what information you’re exposing to the public.

Internet activism group MoveOn.org also decided to take onFacebook over these privacy issues by sending an email out to supporters as well as posting a petition on their site. Facebook, however, has not been silent on the public’s outcry and growing pressure. In an attempt to soothe concerns, Facebook has responded by bringing enhanced and simpler privacy controls to the social networking service.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg admits that his company has made some mistakes. He writes in The Washington Post:

“The biggest message we have heard recently is that people want easier control over their information. Simply put, many of you thought our controls were too complex. Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark.”

Zuckerberg responded to his previous statement by saying:

“Sometimes we move too fast—and after listening to recent concerns, we’re responding.”
